Types of Cases Heard at the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas
The Lorain County Court of Common Pleas hears civil and criminal cases of all kinds. Pertinent to criminal matters, the court can hear any misdemeanor or felony case involving an alleged violation of state law. A defendant may be processed and engaged in pretrial proceedings at another court before their case is transferred to the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas for further adjudication.
Misdemeanors
A misdemeanor is a criminal offense that’s considered less severe than a felony. As such, the penalty for a misdemeanor conviction cannot exceed more than a year in jail. Regardless, seeking legal counsel to protect your rights when facing misdemeanor charges is important.
Felonies
Felonies are serious crimes for which the penalty can range from more than one year in state prison to life imprisonment or even death. Felony charges are serious, and anyone who faces them should secure experienced legal representation that can help them defend against unfair accusations or otherwise mitigate their legal situation.
Recent Case Results At Lorain County Court of Common Pleas
A favorable outcome can mean many things, such as a case dismissal, acquittal, reduced charges, probation in lieu of jail time, or obtaining the minimum sentence in spite of conviction. Take a look at some of recent case results we helped our clients achieve:
- Acquittal: In the State v. Tevin Biles, our client faced charges for a triple murder and felonious assault due to an alleged shooting at a New Year’s Eve party. Many people were injured and three died from the incident, but we proved that there wasn’t enough evidence to convict our client for what happened.
- Charges Dismissed: In the State v. Beckwith, Cuyahoga County, our client was a student charged with manufacturing ecstasy. Our aggressive representation allowed our client to enter into a treatment program that led to the dismissal of their charges.
- Plea and Record Expunged: In the State v. Bailey, Cuyahoga, our client was accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of property. We negotiated this felony aggravated theft charge down to a misdemeanor, and the matter was expunged one year later.
- Charges Dismissed: In the State v. Bittner, Lorain County, we helped our client enter into a first-offender program after being arrested and charged with drug trafficking. Ultimately, the charges were dismissed.
- House Arrest and Probation: In the U.S. v Brehun, our client was accused of federal bankruptcy fraud, which is a serious felony that can carry many years in federal prison. Instead, we helped our client receive house arrest and probation as a favorable alternative.
These outcomes exemplify what can happen when Patituce & Associates provides a defendant with personalized legal representation. Although no outcome can be guaranteed, we strive to protect our clients against unfair accusations and consequences. You can count on us to help you seek justice.
